Programme Description

This programme is targeted towards individuals who wish to enhance their skills and competences in pedagogy. The target audience is either qualified individuals wishing to join the education sector or persons already within the education sector who need to follow an initial teacher-training course. It aims to equip participants with the necessary tools and competences to teach effectively in the 21st century classroom whilst fostering a supportive and inclusive environment for learning.

By the end of this programme, participants will be able to:

Competences

  1. Effectively deliver inclusive lessons enhancing learners’ knowledge and problem solving skills.
  2. Assess learners through a range of tools and techniques to scaffold learning.
  3. Collaborate effectively with educators, the senior management team, and stakeholders in education to develop a professional learning community that enhances students learning experience.
  4. Critically review own practices and use professional judgement to make adjustments that address complex issues that arise in the classroom.
  5. Conduct educational research to address an identified research area.

Knowledge

  1. Define the structural components of a scheme of work and lesson plan.
  2. Systematically identify a range of assessment for and of learning strategies applicable to the classroom.
  3. Determine the necessary characteristics which form a part of a conduicive to learning environment catering towards learners with different needs.
  4. Describe different methodologies that can be employed to engage diverse learners.
  5. Demonstrate knowledge of theoretical and practical knowledge of education to make judgements based on ethical and social issues that arise in the school environment.
  6. Determine key theories, literature and approaches relevant to conducting educational research.

Skills

  1. Plan and critically evaluate learning activities to facilitate learners’ development of higher order skills of analysis, synthesis, evaluation and creating towards the ability of problem solving.
  2. Critically evaluate a variety of assessment techniques that enhance the learning experience.
  3. Create a positive classroom environment conducive to learning.
  4. Evaluate own practices against success criteria and adjust accordingly to the benefit of the learners.
  5. Review critically appropriate literature and methodology to design and conduct educational research.

 

This programme adopts a blended approach to teaching and learning, 50% will be delivered online and 50% face-to-face. The online approach may be either synchronous and asynchronous sessions. Lectures are held either online or at the Institute for Education and/or workshops/sports grounds of licensed compulsory education schools or premises. The teaching practice module will be delivered at licensed, compulsory education schools.

This programme adopts continuous and summative methods of assessment including assignments, online tasks, portfolios, reflective journals, projects and presentations. Participants will also need to successfully pass three (3) teaching practices. Upon successful completion of this programme, course participants will be conferred a Bachelor of Education (Hons) accredited and recognised by the Malta Further and Higher Education Authority.

This course is recognised by the Council for the Teaching Profession and serves as part of the requirements to apply for the position of regular teacher. It may also provide access to further studies at MQF Level 7.
